ASCAP takes on Creative Commons and the “Copyleft”

via ZeroPaid:

Creative Commons (Nothing is More Powerful than Shared Knowledge) licenses are simple to understand, “With a Creative Commons license, you keep your copyright but allow people to copy and distribute your work provided they give you credit — and only on the conditions you specify.”

ASCAP for obvious reasons has no use for Creative Commons or Copyleft thinking. ASCAP has just sent a letter to its members asking for a donation to fight CC, Electronic Frontier Foundation and others. ASCAP claims… “we are facing our biggest challenge ever. Many forces including Creative Commons, Public Knowledge, Electronic Frontier Foundation and technology companies with deep pockets are mobilizing to promote “Copyleft” in order to undermine our “Copyright.” They say they are advocates of consumer rights, but the truth in these groups simply do not want to pay for the use of our music. Their mission is to spread the word that our music should be free.”

The Wiki article on Copyleft is a good start for those of you not familiar with the meaning behind this politicized intellectual property neologism.

I am happy to assist and advise clients and the general public with Creative Commons and other Copyleft licenses.
